Rene J. Kern, Jr.
Rene J. Kern, Jr. is a trial lawyer with over 25 years of courtroom experience. He began his career practicing law with the distinguished L.A. firm of Hillsinger & Costanzo. Ten years later, he opened his own downtown law firm where he tried or litigated a wide variety of personal injury, wrongful death, product and premises liability, employment law, securities cases, he has tried over 75 cases to verdict. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants, handling cases involving hundreds of millions of dollars.
Mr. Kern's particular expertise is taking complicated matters and making them understandable to clients and juries alike. His practical, common sense approach to trial work has been profiled in the Los Angeles Daily Journal.
Most recently Mr Kern won a substantial verdict in a personal injury case representing one of our clients, a young man against the DWP for their creation of a dangerous condition. The DWP allowed a leak to persist over a main thoroughfare and ignored the weather forecast of a cold freeze for the area. Our client was involved in a motor vehicle accident where he sustained a herniated disc. Facing a $30,000 offer from the Defendants, the case proceeded to trial. At the time of trial, the client had not undergone a surgical repair. Upon hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict for $1,300,000.00 on behalf of our client.
Mr. Kern is a member of the American Board of Trial Lawyers, the L.A. County and American Bar Associates, and the State Bar of California. He was rated by Martindale-Hubbell as an AV attorney, their highest rating. He practices in the Courts of California, the U.S. Court of Appeals - 9th Circuit and the U.S. District Court, Central and Southern Districts of California. He has tried/litigated cases in New York, New Mexico, Georgia and Colorado.
Mr. Kern's many years of service as a Settlement Conference Officer for the County of Los Angeles Superior Court have won him numerous certificates of appreciation. He continues to lecture at numerous legal groups regarding trial preparation and tactics.
A lifelong athlete, Mr. Kern had an early career as a College swimmer and water polo coach. For his continuing commitment to physical education, he was honored with the Ethos Award from the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
